Design for an Adaptive Library Catalog

چکیده
A progress report on the design and demonstration of a prototype adaptive catalog, OASIS. Online catalog searches commonly retrieve too few or too many items. This prototype, implemented as a transparent, workstation-based front-end to the University of California’s MELVYL (tm) online catalog, adapts to excessive or insufficient retrieval by strategically limiting, sorting or expanding users searches, based on preferences defined by the user.
